We often talk about the Microcosm and Macrocosm, because when we see ourselves from this ancient angle then it can help us to gain a clear perspective on the divine.
Throughout the ages, all spiritual traditions spoke about the deep connection between man and the universe. These wisdom teachings all tell that man is a microcosm, a small cosmos that reflects the vast macrocosm that includes all of creation, and in the absolute spherical centre of the microcosm and the macrocosm, radiates a central sun that illuminates both.
The Microcosm and the Macrocosm
Men and women from past ages and civilisations understood themselves to be a reflection of the cosmos and the macrocosmos. This idea existed everywhere because it was a collective experience and, therefore, understood and expressed by many. This direct experience made those that were initiated say words like: “As above, so below” and “As in heaven, so on earth”.
This Knowledge has been passed on through Gnosticism, medieval hermeticism, and mysticism, and it is also abundantly found in modern spirituality.
This axiom reveals the mystery that everything that exists in the universe also exists within us in a corresponding form. This implies also that we are not isolated beings but that we are one with each other and with the whole.
Our teachings, based on the Universal Doctrine, explain that the microcosm is an autonomous, spherical “field of life” that surrounds and permeates the physical body. It is a self-contained system that includes different layers of consciousness and potential. Just as the stars, planets, sun, and moon move according to great cosmic laws, in the same way, our microcosm belongs originally in its image to the greater, harmonious whole of the macrocosm.
The Light Hidden in a Dormant Microcosm
Over countless incarnations, our microcosms have drifted away from our original divine state. This schism happened because our entanglement with the illusions of the transient world became stronger. With each entanglement, we have woven the web we are caught in. With each entanglement, a new layer of illusion is added, blocking our connection to the higher reality to which we originally belong.
We also mentioned that there is a central sun in the microcosm and macrocosm. In our microcosm, there is a Light in the form of the Divine Spark, the seed of the original Spirit of all Life. When this Spirit Spark awakens in us, and we follow it, then it leads us on a progressive path of transformation of the microcosm by which the connection of our soul with the divine order of the macrocosm is renewed.
The Microcosm Across Time
We find signals of this universal micro-macrocosm wisdom throughout all ages in various spiritual traditions.
- Plato talked about the World Soul as a cosmic intelligence mirrored within each human being.
- In Sufism, the human soul is often poetically described as a hidden reflection of the divine but then veiled by forgetfulness.
- The Kabbalistic Tree of Life displays how the divine order manifests through multiple planes of existence reflecting our original divine structure.
- In the 17th century, the Rosicrucians mentioned that the microcosm is a fallen divine creation calling for regeneration to reform ourselves and the world.
- Gnosticism also mentions this mystery and describes the material world as a realm of illusion in which humanity’s divine essence has become imprisoned. The Gnostic initiatory path was a journey of re-remembering and restoring this divine spark by its own power that breaks us free from ignorance and illusion. In the Gospel of Thomas, we read:“When you know yourselves, you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father.”
The Journey of Transformation
To fully understand our microcosmic relationship with the macrocosm, we need to undergo a process of inner transformation that enables us to tune out from ourselves and into the living macrocosm. For this, we need to transcend our self-centredness.
This path of transformation is not about finding a new method of polishing up our masks, but about unmasking ourselves to a process that brings about an awakening led by the higher laws that belong to the Light within and without.
Our path is not about outer knowledge but an inner one. It is about growing aware from within and to remove all veils of illusion one by one, so that the divine harmonies of the heavenly cosmos have a chance to radiate through us more and more.
